Playgroup & Nursery for children of Ickleford, Hitchin & surrounding areas.

Our Rooms

Ickleford Pre-School has two rooms, each specifically catering for our younger and our older children. The smaller Caterpillar Room (Playgroup) takes children from two to three years. Children attend the larger Butterfly Room (Nursery) from three years until they start school.

The two rooms have different environments, appropriate to the needs of their children. However, close links exist between the two, with shared planning, activities and the occasional combined session. This allows plenty of opportunity for children to get to know each other, and produces a friendly, close-knit setting.

The Caterpillar Room

The Caterpillar Room, also known as ‘Playgroup’, welcomes children from the age of two up to three years.

This small friendly setting introduces toddlers to a new sociable environment away from the home. Children are encouraged to practise their newly acquired walking and talking skills, and gain self-confidence. Our generous staff to child ratio ensures children receive the attention needed to feel safe and secure, and begin to explore their surroundings.

The Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides a framework for early years education. We provide age-appropriate child-led activities that underpin EYFS values. Through playful teaching, our children are gradually introduced to specific areas of literacy; mathematics; expressive arts and design; and understanding the world.

The Butterfly Room

The Butterfly Room, also known as ‘Nursery’, welcomes up to thirty children from the half term following their third birthday.* As well as mornings, we also offer afternoon sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays  (session times).

As in the Caterpillar Room, this room also follows the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. This allows the children to experience a wide range of fun activities that enhance their learning and development.

Children are encouraged to develop their curiosity and knowledge of the world around them through a combination of play and adult-led activities. They are also encouraged to take their first steps towards independence, as part of their preparation for primary school. All children regularly take library books home.
